We are The Lady Ms. Vagina Jenkins (we/they/she.) I like to use "we" as a self identifying pronoun because it reminds me of my Ancestors- The People who survived so that I could thrive. "We/Us/Ours" also reminds Us that despite the isolation of living as a Disabled/Chronically ill/Neurodivergent person We Are Not Alone. We are supported by networks and communities of folx that share our experiences. We come from a Black, Southern and Poverty class background; from people who worked hard, and made do. The art of Making Do was Our very first creative practice; taking the materials on hand and using Our talents to reimagine them into creations of beauty.
Through a myriad of creative practices We are always looking for ways to Make Do. In our performance, costuming and millinery works We repurpose and upcycle found materials and historic dance/movement into luxe, fantastic glamour. In Our Taxidermy work We transmute the tragedy of death into flora and fauna sculpture that highlights the beauty of the natural world. In our film and experimental works We ask What Is and how it can be Made to Do/Be more?
We have had the pleasure of sharing our performance work quite literally across the world, and have been invited to share work at The London Burlesque Festival, as part of both a Canadian and Southern US tours of Mangoes With Chili the floating cabaret of Queer and Trans people of color bliss, dreams, sweat, sweets & nightmares. Our films have been awarded audience choice awards at QWOCMAP, Qinfolk and Boston LGBT Film Festivals. Most recently, RADAR Productions commissioned Us to create a short film exploring Black Queer sensuality through an Afrofuturist lens, see the "Film & Performance" tab to view this film called "REIFIED".
Image description: TLMVJ, a light skinned Black femme, makes fierce eye contact with the camera. Photographed from the bust upwards, they wear a deep green velvet jacket embroidered with teal/green blue floral motif, the jacket has the feel of some un-identified European ethnic group. Their hair is in braids accented with gold wire bands, they wear a single earring that looks like a gold blunt through gauged earlobes. Their makeup is artfully applied- a green smoky eye and a deep emerald lippy. They hold a single stem of white, fluffy cotton in their teeth as well as an intricate gold crown. They are fierce AF!
Let's get to know each other in a more intimate, accessible way!
